Egypt - The Nile at Luxor

A long time ago Herodot wrote that the Nile is Egypts present. By that he meant that Egypt owe everything to the Nile. The Nile is 6670 km long and the worlds longest river. Opposite all other rivers in Africa the Nile runs from the south to the north. All other rivers in Africa runs east to the west. The Nile flow into the Mediterranean.

Before the first Aswan-dam was build in 1898-1902 the Nile flooded four month a year. The water brought big amounth of the fertile mud, that the egyptian people used as manure and as building materials.

The Nile is at first the blue and the white Nile. The white is the longest and most slowly, it startes in the tropic central of Africa. The blue Nile startes in Etiophia. From Khartoum they run together slowly through Sahara desert and all of Egypt.

Nord for Cairo deler floden sig igen i to arme, og imellem disse arme danner myriader af kanaler en frodig grøn vifte - denne kaldes for deltaet. Nilen er dernæst nået Middelhavet og den lange rejse er slut.
