Egypt - Memnon colossus in Luxor

These two giant colossus is no less than 18 meters, was ones the entrance to Amenophis 3´s deathtemple. But this temple is long gone, because of the Nil. Four month every year the Nil flooded, before the Aswan-dam was build.

The strongly erode colossus is of course Amenophis himself, but the romans maintained that it was Memnon, which was son of the goddess Eos (dawn). The name Memnon has been here ever since.

About year 27 A.D. an earthquake made a crack in the colossus at north. The crack made a whisteling sound, and the legend tell that it was Memnon calling for his mother, when she showed on the morning sky.

I the year 199 A.D. an emperor repaired the crack, and stopped the legend.
