Cairo
Cairo is the capital in Egypt. With the suburbs, the population in
Cairo is about 16.500.000 people – and is the largest city in
Africa. The foundation for Cairo was build in 969 and lays in the
southern part of the Nile Delta. In the capitol Giza (El Gizh) lays
the three great pyramidsCheops, Chephren
and Mykerinos.
Alexandria
Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and lies by the Niles
Delta by the Mediterranean. The population in Alexandria is about
4.500.000 people.
Originally the foundation for Alexandria was build by Alexander the
great in 332 BC, but Alexandria was later captured by the Arabian in
the 7. Century. In 1517 Alexandria was invaded by the Turkish troops
and from 1882 until 1947 the city was a British garrison town.
Alexandria is an important cultural centre and still has a Greek
look. Today Alexandria are a large sea port and one of the most
important one in the world.
Hurghada
The population in Hurghada is
about 50.000 people and the city lays by the red sea on the east
cost of Egypt. The Arabian name for Hurghada is Al Ghardaqah.
Original Hurghada was a small fishing village with a very long
beach. Today the city is about 37 km long and it has hotels as large
as the village. Many tourists appreciate Hurghada because you can
easily dive or snorkel in the clear water. There are many
different corals and colourful fish.
Luxor
The population in Luxor is about 360.000 people and it lies on the
eastside of the Nile in the Upper-Egypt. Luxor is a part of the
enormous area with ruins, like
Karnak temple
and Luxor temple and
the Valley of
the Kings, on the west coast of the Nile. In Arabian Luxor is
called al-Uqsur which means the castles. Luxor lays today where the
southern part of the city Theben layed in the olden time.
In the Valley of
the Kings they found
Tutankhamuns
grave in 1922. And archaeologist found in 1995 a common grave for
the two sons of Ramses the second.
